A man wakes up in a forest in what appears to be medieval England, with no memory of his past, or what he is doing in this place. He is pursued by a group from his time, and his only hope of survival is to lie until he regains his lost memory, thus allying himself with a group of local residents, while at the same time he has doubts about their superstitions. . The only help he has from the real world is a guidebook bearing the name of the thrifty magician for survival in medieval England, but the copy he had with him exploded during his move.
