Award-winning writer Alice McDermott received the National Book Award for her novel Charming Billy. She is also a three-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. She is acclaimed for her ability to perfectly capture a time and place, and for her deft characterizations of "ordinary" working class Irish folks who, but for her portrayals, might remain invisible. She is a professor of the humanities at Johns Hopkins University.
