Overview

When a visiting croc expert invites Akimbo along on a field study, Akimbo is thrilled. But when the crocodiles attack the guide, injuring him gravely, it will be up to Akimbo to cross a crocodile-infested river and jump start a truck to bring back help. A rousing new Akimbo adventure from bestselling author Alexander McCall Smith.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

In a third paper-over-board tale, Akimbo and the Crocodile Man by Alexander McCall Smith, illus. by LeUyen Pham, the young hero who lives on the edge of an African game reserve (PW called the launch title a "fast-paced tale") must find help for a crocodile expert after the man is attacked by one of his specimens. Kirkus Reviews

Akimbo's third adventure resembles his earlier experiences. A straightforward plot, spare storytelling and avuncular tone create a contemporary chapter book with an old-fashioned feel. Neither Akimbo's homeland nor his age is revealed, giving the story either a universal appeal or an oddly unfinished aspect, depending on your point of view. Akimbo is, as always, brave and clever. Intrigued by a zoologist studying crocodiles, Akimbo accompanies him while he works. When a crocodile attacks the scientist, Akimbo must find help. His success is never in question, making for very little real suspense in his dangerous trip through crocodile-infested waters. The convenient coincidences of his having recently learned how to hotwire an ignition and the arrival of one of his father's colleagues fit perfectly with the style of the series. Predictable but pleasant. (Fiction. 7-10)

DEC 07/JAN 08 - AudioFile

When John arrives in Akimbo's village eager to find crocodile eggs, watch a hatch, and tag the baby crocodiles, Akimbo's father has little interest. However, for Akimbo, the chance to accompany John and help with his undertaking is both a dream come true and a dangerous proposition. How could someone as knowledgeable as John have scars from crocodiles? Alexander McCall Smith narrates his own tale with precision and intimacy. His clip is jaunty and his tone low; this challenges the listener to keep up—to catch all the steps for disentangling an angry crocodile from the nets and to hear the full procedure for the night watch at the sandbank. This suspenseful production offers detailed information on crocodiles and will bear multiple listens. A.R. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine
