After three decades of battling addiction, I hit rock bottom and searched for recovery and wellness. I spent a combined total of 23 years in jail and prison for petty larceny charges to support my habit. With co-occurring disorders ranging from depression, PTSD, bipolar, and Substance Use Disorder, I felt I had no way out of a meaningless life. Hopeless, suicidal, and lacking self-esteem, I entered the Drug Court Program, and everything changed.

While in Drug Court, I earned two college degrees, held a steady job at the regional hospital, and began a career as a mental health professional to include becoming a VA Board Certified Peer Recovery Specialist. In addition, I spent most of my free time at the children’s hospital in Norfolk, VA, volunteering and participating in Arts & Crafts with the young patient’s. Today, I am a peer specialist, qualified mental health professional, and certified substance abuse counselor trainee with the Virginia Department of Health Professions. I was recently approved and copyrighted for research by Liberty University on children exposed to violence in underserved communities. On January 3, 2022’, I published my first book, “Lighting the Way: Hidden Treasures.” It highlights the importance of peer support in the treatment of mental health and promotes self-love in the hidden treasures we all possess.
