Overview

When worries and fears come along, Harley the Hedgehog can handle them—and so can your child! A fun activity book for coping with anxiety, for kids ages 5 to 9.

Expert psychologist and best-selling author Dr. Regine Galanti offers an activity book that teaches kids how to be brave and feel less anxious. All children get anxious sometimes. For some kids, though, anxiety can become something bigger and more intrusive, stopping them from enjoying friends, family, activities, sports, or school. Through a friendly character, colorful illustrations, and fun activities made specifically for kids ages 5 to 9, they will learn cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) strategies to allow them to work through anxious situations on their own. By practicing these strategies, kids will develop the skills needed to manage their anxiety by changing their worried thoughts, behaviors, and physical reactions.

This age-appropriate guide to coping with anxiety features:

  • A friendly and supportive character: Kids will navigate their emotions and learn to understand and conquer their worries alongside Harley the Hedgehog.
  • Proven strategies through CBT: With CBT-informed exercises that build upon each other and add up to big results, kids will have the tools they need to cope and thrive.
  • 45+ fun activities: From writing and drawing to crafts and mindfulness exercises, kids will learn to understand their feelings, find their anxiety triggers, quiet their thoughts, and make a coping plan.

  • Managing anxiety can be tough, but with this complete resource, kids will master new skills to use whenever anxiety pops up—so they get back to the joy of being a kid!

What People are Saying About This

    From the Publisher

When Harley Has Anxiety does what all great therapists selecting cognitive behavioral strategies aim to do for youth with anxiety: make the strategies fun, engaging, and clear, so that children can enjoy using them! With lively metaphors and activities throughout, Dr. Regine Galanti has crafted an essential resource to help children with their anxiety. Harley the Hedgehog and her coping strategies for anxiety will be loved by parents and children working toward "doing hard things" together in their efforts to overcome avoidance behaviors and reduce distress. —Jill Ehrenreich-May, PhD, professor and director, Child and Adolescent Mood and Anxiety Treatment Program, University of Miami

When Harley Has Anxiety is a superb asset for parents and children. Engaging and clearly written, it is a science-backed book for families to read together and work on separately. Harley, a hedgehog, whose spines stand up when she’s anxious, learns to talk back to “Mr. Meany Quills.” Along the way, she identifies what triggers her anxiety, shakes off her “Ants” (unhelpful thoughts), and works through helpful and fun activities to relieve her worries and fears! —Mary K. Alvord, PhD, psychologist; co-author of Resilience Builder Program for Children and Adolescents and Conquer Negative Thinking for Teens

Dr. Galanti has done a beautiful job creating this engaging, fun, hands-on activity book that incorporates evidence-based CBT treatment strategies for anxious kids and their loved ones. This book is full of practical tools to help parents, kids, teachers, and even therapists become better equipped to understand and provide effective help for children struggling with worries and fears. As a specialist in the treatment of anxiety, I highly recommend this book as a resource for educating, engaging, and motivating kids to develop essential skills they will use for life! —Allison Solomon, PsyD, licensed clinical psychologist; director of The Virtual Center for Anxiety and OCD
