Gr 2-6-In each of these titles, LaFosse offers eight projects, presumably of his own design, with something for folders at many levels of expertise. He begins simply-with a nine-step Mardi Gras mask in Masks, for instance, and a "Table Kite" in Science Experiments that needs just five steps-then, often, builds on them for subsequent, more sophisticated models. His "Puzzles" are the trickiest, all being modular boxes or other constructions needing anywhere from two to eight pieces of paper. Each set of instructions begins with a few remarks about the model's cultural connection or suggestions for use, followed by clear, well-captioned, black-and-white step diagrams that use standard origami notation, and a color photo of the finished project. Despite a few bobbles-the pages explaining the notation, for instance, are placed at the back of each volume rather than at the beginning, and the author states that all of his masks start with the paper color side down (not so with the skull)-these guides will be valuable additions for both their special themes and their new material.-John Peters, New York Public Library Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
