The Pura Belpré Award is named after the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library. Pura Belpré has enriched the lives of Latino children while working as a Librarian, author, and storyteller. Established in 1996, the award was presented biennially from the inaugural year to 2008. In 2009, it was changed to be given annually. The award is given to a Latino/ Latina writer and illustrator whose work best conveys the Latino cultural experience in children's literature. The award is held by a division of the American Library Association (ALA) and REFORMA. These Pura Belpré award-winning books are perfect for classroom teaching, light reading, and kid's book club picks. With much of these award-winners being available both in Spanish and English, these books are great for bilingual children or students of the Spanish language and Latino culture.
