Novena for the Souls in Purgatory
The Novena for the Poor Souls in Purgatory, penned by the great Doctor of the Church, St. Alphonsus Liguori, stands as a profound expression of the Catholic understanding of the Communion of Saints, the expiatory nature of Christ's sufferings, and the urgent need to offer prayers for the souls in Purgatory. Through this novena, we enter into the mysteries of Christ's Passion, invoking His redemptive suffering to obtain mercy for the Holy Souls who are undergoing purification.

In the meditations by Father Scott Haynes, which accompany each day of the novena, we contemplate the theological significance of the prayers of St. Alphonsus and draw from the wisdom of the saints and Church Fathers to deepen our understanding of this spiritual work of mercy.

About the Author

St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, CSsR (1696–1787) was an Italian Catholic bishop and saint, as well as a spiritual writer, composer, musician, artist, poet, lawyer, scholastic philosopher, and theologian. He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, known as the Redemptorists, in November 1732. In 1762 he was appointed Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti. A prolific writer, he published nine editions of his Moral Theology in his lifetime, in addition to other devotional and ascetic works and letters. Among his best known works are The Glories of Mary and The Way of the Cross, the latter still used in parishes during Lenten devotions. He was canonized in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1871. One of the most widely read Catholic authors, he is the patron saint of confessors.

Rev. Scott Haynes was ordained in 2007 by Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., for the Archdiocese of Chicago. He has written books on liturgy and music, as well as books for children. He has collaborated with Oxford University Press, St. Benedict Press, Ignatius Press and with the Midwest Theological Forum on numerous projects.
