"A fun, feisty tale about community organizing." —Kirkus Reviews

In her latest series outing, young Anjali fights to save her beloved local community center.

Anjali’s distressed to see the sign announcing that the center will be closing. It means so much to her: It’s where she takes tabla lessons and where the family enjoys movie nights. It’s also where her brother, Milan, took his first steps and where her parents play cards. Anjali isn’t sure what to do until she sees Milan vehemently refuse to eat his vegetables: It’s time to protest! Anjali’s family organizes a rally, but only a few people show up. Anjali and her friends then gather signatures for a petition to keep the community center open, only to find that they’re too late, since the center’s fate was decided at a hearing they didn’t attend. Were all Anjali’s efforts in vain? Reminiscent of Nandini Ahuja’sRise Up and Write It(2021), illustrated by Anoosha Syed, this book balances Anjali’s ebullient hopefulness with the practical realities of organizing. Soto’s digital illustrations feature big-eyed, big-headed characters set against mostly white backdrops; whether striking determined poses or drooping in discouragement, Anjali cuts an endearing figure. Overall, it’s a spunky, inspiring story of children’s political power. Anjali and her family are of South Asian descent; their neighborhood is diverse.

A fun, feisty tale about community organizing.(Picture book. 4-8)
