The Blue Series: The Story Behind the Color
"I love great books about records: ripping yarns about everything that happened on the way to my stereo, with no minutiae too small to matter. The Blue Series: The Story Behind the Coloris the tale, in depth, behind every Blue single." – David Fricke, Rolling Stone
The Blue Series: The Story Behind the Color is 282 pages of behind-the-scenes stories, information, and interviews about the Jack White produced Blue Series singles. This hardcover book also includes a 7" single of unreleased Blue Series session songs by First Aid Kit and Gibby Haynes (Butthole Surfers) on black vinyl, a ten song sampler of Blue Series music curated by the book's editor Ben Blackwell, Foreword by award-winning Rolling Stone music journalist David Fricke, and exclusive interviews with Beck, Courtney Barnett, Stepehn Colbert, Insane Clown Posse, Wanda Jackson, Kate Pierson, Dexter Romweber, Jack White, Dwight Yoakam, and more. As the brainchild of Jack White, the Blue Series started in tandem with Third Man Records, White’s Nashville-based record label founded in 2009. Built on the simple premise of 7” 45rpm singles all recorded in the same studio, with the same producer (White), with photos taken in the same locale (Third Man Records’ onsite Blue Room) and manufactured at the same pressing plant (United Record Pressing), a stone’s throw from TMR’s offices) the resultant 40 singles impressively run the gamut of artists and styles. Whether it’s the wildly popular like Beck, the classic veteran Tom Jones, the character Stephen Colbert, the polarizing Insane Clown Posse, or previously unknown performers making their debut releases, the Blue Series is the perfect snapshot of what Third Man, and by extension Jack White, have focused on and championed for the past seven years.

What People are Saying About This

From the Publisher

“Maybe the most fun day I ever had on the show was being at Third Man that day. And not just the interview but like the atmosphere of the place. It’s like a playground. It’s a clubhouse. — Stephen Colbert

"For me being on the Blue Series side-by-side with so many talented musicians is huge. It made me feel validated as a musician. There is no one else out there doing what Third Man is doing. Through the Series, Jack White is showcasing and cataloging acts that might get overlooked otherwise. I think in years to come it will be seen as a valuable snapshot of what was happening across all genres during this generation.” — Jessica Davies, Smoke Fairies

“Later he took us in his white Cadillac to get burgers at this drive-in along the road. Unreal. I actually found a Costa- Rican one hundred dollar bill on the carfloor in the back that I took as a souvenir. Sorry, Jack.” — Dungen

“There’s a certain magic innocence to it — if that makes sense — to further hyper-extend the metaphor, it’s a teenage magic innocence. I mean, that’s what it felt like: a magic teenage innocence that you’re revisiting. It’s what you think originally making records was like. You go in, you play all together with this band and cut this record. That’s what Jack is essentially doing.” — Dwight Yoakam

“It felt volcanic. It felt like this beautiful — and I mean volcanic- like instability to the creative process that is intoxicating.” — Chris Thile

“I had just purchased the Searching for Sugarman and had watched it and cried. Hearing ‘I Wonder’ really moved me, so I asked Britt [Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes] if she’d be down to do that for one of the tunes. I think it was a happy marriage.” — Ruby Amanfu

"People started referring to me as an artist. That sure made things easier!” — Daniel Pujol in regards to how his career was different after he released his Blue Series single.

"Thanks, Third Man Records for making my Blue Series ... I love that record and loved making it. Good memories!!" — Michael Kiwanuka

“I honestly don’t remember why I chose ‘Postcard from Hell’ to record. I didn’t have a set plan on what would be on the single. I believe I re-wrote the lyrics to the B-side that day during the studio session.” — Duane the Teenage Weirdo

“We wanted to record Japanese folk songs, and Japanese post-war music in Nashville.” — The 5.6.7.8’s

“He kept saying, ‘Just push a little harder. Give it a little more push.’ I said, ‘Jack, you’re trying to get that 18-year-old girl I used to be out here singing this song and I can’t do it.’ And he said, ‘Yes you can.” Here we went with that just push, push, push. And he left it on the record, if you do listen to the very beginning, before I start the song I say, ‘Why do I always have to push? So that’s where that came from. But once we got it down, I think it’s about my favorite song [‘You Know I’m No Good’ by Amy Winehouse] I do on stage, I just love to sing it. — Wanda Jackson
