Emily Bornoff is a picture-book designer, writer, and illustrator who works in traditional print-making techniques, including lithography, screen-printing, intaglio, and relief. A recent graduate of the Cambridge School of Art's Children's Book Illustration program, she is now focused on creating new children's books and prints.

K-Gr 2—A gentle introduction to the biomes of the world in which endangered animals reside. In a seek-and-find format with rhyming prose, the book introduces children to different species by asking them to search for the animals hidden within the illustrations. The endangered creatures blend in with the background and repeated landscapes. "Someone is hunting on the Arctic ice floes./He has thick white fur and a little black nose./He makes his home in this land of snow./Where did the enormous polar bear go?" Readers can search the spread and look for the polar bear. The illustrations were created digitally, and simple use of color enhances each environment where the animal is found. The animal images are quite small (most likely to emphasize their endangered status), but they seem out of balance with the scope of the drawings. Back matter provides a glossary of each animal, drawn on a larger scale, explaining its habitat and reasons why it is endangered. A map of the world is also provided, indicating where the animals can be found. VERDICT This introductory picture book is a stepping stone to learning more about endangered species. To give readers ways to visualize the idea of rarity, Bornoff invites viewers to pick out 13 threatened creatures hidden in as many intricately patterned landscapes.The notion is clever, but the execution is wanting. Each of the rare or endangered animals, which range from polar bear and panda to addax and bilby, is rendered as a miniscule figure lurking in a characteristic but stylized and often fancifully colored habitat that is expanded, usually through tessellation, to the edges of the page. The author provides hints in an accompanying rhyme—"Up in the trees, so as not to be seen, / hangs a three-fingered creature with fur brownish-green"—and at the end, there's a larger image and a quick comment about each. But readers are likely to be left scratching their heads anyway. She renders her bison's "dusty plains" and "tall waving grasses" as mountains covered in pine trees, arbitrarily adds a background of black stripes to a forested setting just to make the zebra a bit harder to spot, and places a field of ice floes behind a screen of blue snowflakes. Also, she includes the red squirrel in her selected cast even though, as she admits, it's really only a rarity in the U.K. (where this book originates).Seek-and-find fans will enjoy the challenge, but both the point and much of the informational detail are lost amid the artsy touches.
