Margie Palatini has written many books for children, including Piggie Pie, which was an ALA Notable Book and a Booklist Editor's Choice book, Bedhead, which was a Newsweek Best Book of the Year, and several other picture books with numerous state awards.

Dan Yaccarino is an acclaimed author and illustrator of many children's books including Doug Unplugged, Unlovable and The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau; the creator and producer of the Parents Choice Award-winning animated series Oswald and the Emmy-winning Willa's Wild Life, as well as the character designer behind the Emmy-winning The Backyardigans. His books have won a host of prestigious awards including the New York Times Best Illustrated award, an ALA Notable designation, a Parents Choice Award, and the Bologna Ragazzi. In the four words of the title and page after page of gleeful mischief, Palatini (Stuff) and Yaccarino (Count on the Subway) sum up the eternal nap-time dialectic. This Mama and Baby may share the same exuberantly curly auburn ’do, but when Mama announces with endearingly mistaken confidence that it’s naptime, Baby rejects the offer and leads her on a merry, blankie-toting chase (“Nap, yes, says Mama. Yes yes yes! Nap, no! No no no!”) through their stylized, pastel-hued house. Baby is able to wrangle a song (a wonderful moment in which both mother and child channel their inner “Broadway Baby”), a “big, long” drink of milk, and a story before succumbing to shut-eye, by which time Mama is ready for a snooze, as well. The single plane, largely profile illustrations lend a quirky formal elegance to the chase and give Yaccarino plenty of opportunity to revel in his métier—the human body in comic motion. PreS-Gr 1—Using few words but plenty of rhythm and repetition and even more action, this picture book launches into a quickly escalating showdown: "Mama says, Nap." "Baby says, NO NAP!" Mama and Baby zoom across the spreads, pausing periodically for traditional nap avoidance strategies like clapping, singing, and having a drink ("Now Baby nap?" "NO NAP! Drink! Drink! Drink! Baby big, long drink.") The retro style illustrations done in bold, flat colors using India ink on vellum and then colored and composed digitally are full of movement and energy. The chase takes the two through the house but eventually winds down in the room it all started in with everyone finally getting some much needed rest—including the startled pet fish. Encapsulating this familiar family argument, the endpapers explode with "Yes!" and "No!" A lively, not-ready-for-bed tale featuring one patient mama and her exuberant tyke.It’s naptime, and Baby is off and running. Familiar stalling tactics abound as clapping turns to singing, a request for milk becomes one very long drink, and chase turns to hide-and-seek. But Mama skillfully corrals Baby with a book, and cuddled together, they fall asleep. Digitally colored illustrations, done in a cool palette, capture the toddler’s energy and charm. At first glance, the stylized characters and graphic shapes appear simple, but Yaccarino’s careful use of pattern and color is skillfully designed to help readers identify characters, objects and space. Similarly, the simple, short text is playfully composed to emphasize its delivery. With no dialogue tags and just changes in italicization to distinguish Mama’s dialogue from Baby’s, it will have young listeners chanting along by the second read: “Good Baby. Now Baby nap. / NO NAP. Clap! Clap! Clap! // NO NAP. Sing song. Sing a long song. Long, long song. Sing! Sing! Sing! / Tra-la-la.”It’s so high-spirited it isn’t likely to send any like-minded tots to sleep, but who cares when it’s so much fun? (Picture book. 1-3)
