Max Allan Collins’s books mix fact with fiction. The release of this 1983 novel on audiobook proves his work ages well. Reader Dan John Miller does justice to the story, switching voices and accents with ease and style—from the staccato voice of Walter Winchell to the accent of the Italian immigrant who murdered a mayor. Miller’s pacing is perfection. The story, set in 1930s Chicago, is timeless: Chicago is corrupt from the mayor down to the beat cop, and gangster Frank Nitti is making a play to take over the crime syndicate while his boss, Al Capone, is in jail. Enter Nate Heller, an ex-cop and general good guy (though he’s not above bribery and cheating on his fiancée), who is playing both sides. M.S. © AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine
